Tecno, a relatively unknown smartphone brand, has just released a phone with a retractable lens on the back, like the pocket cameras of yesteryear. Dubbed the Tecno Phantom X2 Pro, the phone packs a 50-megapixel portrait camera with a relatively large f/1.49 aperture, a 65mm lens, and a 1/1.3-inch camera sensor underneath.

Although Tecno calls it a portrait camera, it offers a 2.5x hybrid zoom, but there's no array of optical image stabilization underneath. However, Tecno claims that the larger sensor size, larger aperture, and higher pixel density allow the entire system to collect more light and create a smoother bokeh effect in photos. Tecno isn't the first brand to launch pop-up camera technology.

Oppo saw a pop-up camera module in action a little over a year ago, but has never released it on a consumer phone. Tecno launched the Oppo with a slightly new approach. The only problem is that, like the selfie cameras on phones like the OnePlus 8 Pro, with all the delicate moving parts underneath, the Tecno Phantom X2 Pro's pop-up camera will be a nightmare to fix. SlashGear reached out to Tecno for more clarity on the longevity of the emerging camera technology.

Interestingly, the Tecno Phantom X2 Pro is not a stepper car. A 50-megapixel portrait camera is supported by a 50-megapixel main camera and a 13-megapixel rear camera for ultra-wide-angle photography. For selfie tasks, Tecno has equipped its flagship with a 32-megapixel front-facing camera. On the front is a 6.8-inch curved OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate and a circular hole-punch at the top.

Tecno has equipped its latest offering with MediaTek Dimensity 9000, an octa-core SoC based on 4nm process technology. It features a tri-cluster architecture with one Arm Cortex-X2 core for heavy duty, three Arm Cortex-A710 cores, and four Arm Cortex-A510 cores for light operations. The MediaTek chip is paired with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of onboard storage.

The light is held by a rather large battery with a capacity of 5160 mAh, which supports 45 W fast charging. However, there is no information about wireless charging support. Tecno offers a special edition Phantom X2 Pro in Stardust Gray and Mars Orange that appears to have a leather texture. The Tecno Phantom X2 Pro is priced at SGD 3499, or around $930 at current exchange rates. However, since the company is focused on Asia, Africa, and Europe, this stylish phone won't be available in US retail stores any time soon.
